As the 2024 school year commences, fall sports like football, volleyball, cross country, swimming, and many more also begin their search for success in the 24 season. While all these activities are promising, the Horace Hawks Volleyball team is ready to impact this year’s standings with their experience, work ethic, and culture.
Seniors Alyssa Sommerfeld and Shaylie Bovkoon give insight into how the Hawks are looking to improve from last year. Last season the team finished 7th out of 12 teams in the EDC, making major strides compared to previous years. Senior Captain Alyssa Sommerfeld says, “I know we have a great shot at making it to state this year, playing with basically the same team for four years.” The Hawks only graduated two players last year.
Both players and coaches feel confident that the team has the personnel needed to fill the previous senior’s shoes. Speaking of personnel, Kelby Christofferson, outside / middle, unfortunately tore her ACL over the summer. This means she won’t be able to compete this season. Kelby had a huge positive impact on and off the court. Junior hitter Katelyn Posl looks like she is going to be the other middle hitter alongside Liv Shook. Senior Shaylie Bovkoon speaks on this, “I think that position will be a big role to fill, but Katelyn brings out the big point when we need them with blocking and her smart swings.”
The first game takes place on September 5 at West Fargo High. The Hawks’ first home game is September 12 vs Shanley High. These are big games for the team, and they are looking to bring in a big crowd. All home games can be streamed on the Horace Hawks
