What can you say in three minutes? Do you like advocating for progressive change and for the people? Are you passionate in intellectual and meaningful discourse? Look no further and join Student Congress. I know you’ve heard the rumors, starting August 26 after school, we lead double lives as House Representatives and Senators with our head coach Nathan Amberg.
In Student Congress, students are separated into Houses 1-6 and Senate, to debate each other on resolutions and bills. In these chambers, delegates have the chance of becoming the Presiding Officer (the leader of the chamber) or a representative speaking in the affirmative or negation of the topics and debating with other students. Essentially, it adapts the formal Congressional Debate format into a competitive speech event. At the end of the debate, representatives cast votes on whether to pass or fail the resolutions/bills—the representative with the highest overall score wins the chamber!
Despite the competitive nature of Congress, it proves to be an excellent learning environment for students 7-12 grade.
Jayla Ridout, a Captain of our team, has been competing ever since she was in seventh grade said, “It [Congress] has helped me with my writing, speaking, and researching skills—gain confidence in presenting during class, and get over social anxiety and reach out to people when I need help.”
Our forensics team fosters an open community with an emphasis on communication, dedication, and diligence. Students like Jayla have had their lives changed forever just by joining Student Congress. Be a part of our family: build strong relationships with peers and join us at the State and National tournament. All it takes to become a part of our community is a simple email to our Team Captains: Jayla Ridout, Keagan Kratcha, and Flint Dignan. Join now!
