As the new year starts, we also say hello to many activities. One of these new activities is Cross Country. If you don’t know, Cross Country is a sport where you run for a designated distance against other students across North Dakota. Their first event was on the 24 of August, but they still have a packed schedule between practice and events. If you are curious to see the runners in action, you can show up to one of their meets on September 5, September 16, or October 16. You can also watch them at EDC and State on October 12 in Grand Fork and October 26 in Jamestown. To get a better insight on the sport, I spoke with Owen Rohr about his personal statistics, and other things about the team.
The first thing that caught my attention was the fact that he ran a total of 730 miles over the 2024 summer. To put that in perspective, Chicago is 558 miles away from us, meaning he ran not only through Chicago, but 172 miles past it! As well, if you look at a map and the cities within 730 miles of us, you will see Oklahoma City along the furthest point south. When asked how he practiced running, he said that he mainly runs around the city of Horace. I feel dizzy just thinking about it. When talking about goals, he stated that his main goal was to get into the top 20 at state and EDC, and at the rate he is going, I would not be surprised if he surpasses his goal!
As the fall season starts, we are all so excited to see how the sports all around the state will progress, but we are especially excited to see how cross country will progress. Good luck to everyone on the cross-country team, and we all hope to see remarkable things!
