In a world of shades of blue, a blaze from within illuminates the dreary lands. Through storms of trials and tribulations, this flame rages against winds to weather storms. As life floods adversaries, the flame struggles afloat. In these currents, the winds howl a deafening cry, drowning the silent screams inside; the storms dwindle the flicker of light left. Although life may be bitter and dark, it is in these times when it becomes vital that we seek for others–– the warmth and fire of community.
As the stigma around mental health begins to re-shape, Horace High School takes on the job to create a safer community free of the stigma. In the effort to promote mental health and ensure the well-being of the students, as of now, the school offers two counselors, Ms. Autumn Gossett (H2 Academy, Seniors with A-K last names, and some students in DAC Academy) and Ms. Taylor Schaible (MET Academy, some students in DAC Academy, and Seniors with last names L-Z). Every student has a counselor they are assigned to––an opportunity to be heard and assisted. Reaching out opens you to a plethora of ways to participate in change. In an interview with Ms. Autumn Gossett on September 27, she mentions, “There’s a lot of resources in our local area that students maybe aren’t aware of, we can help connect students with resources; [we can help] students [who] are interested in getting involved with suicide prevention and getting involved with breaking the stigma.” By simply reaching out, you can be a part of the effort to change the world for others and yourself.
Mental health is an important aspect of life and as terrifying as it may seem, a simple conversation goes a long way. Ms. Gossett spoke on the misconception of counselors sharing students’ information to parents. This is a myth, the reality is: you are protected by confidentiality. What is said in the room stays in the room where it happens. “We only break that confidentiality if there is a concern about their safety or somebody else’s safety.” For counselors to help you, you must take the first step and ask for help. Although the first step may be the hardest, it is critical that you take it for the sake of your own well-being.
In the modern world overcast by changing weather and dreary blue skies, our flames flicker and dim the longer it burns. Times may be hard, and struggle is inevitable, never give up. Extinguishing your light only creates more darkness, spreading it upon others. Despite trials and tribulations, you matter. Your words matter, your life matters. Be a part of the change; break the stigma––save a life!
