The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration, and connection. However, for some in our community, it can also bring challenges and unmet needs. That’s where the true meaning of the holiday season—the spirit of giving—thrives. As students and members of the community, we have the ability to make a difference, whether by volunteering or offering support. This year, students at Horace High School are stepping up to help. From volunteering at local shelters to hosting toy and clothing drives, their efforts remind us that small acts of kindness can create a big impact.
One notable example is the Student Council, which held a food drive to support the Willow Park Food Drive, providing essential items to families in need. Similarly, students involved in the Hawk Closet winter gear drive found the experience incredibly rewarding, with members expressing sincere gratitude to all who donated. HOSA also organized a toy drive in partnership with Sanford Children’s Hospital, bringing joy to children in need. Giving has never been more accessible, with DECA hosting a donation drive to support the YWCA in Fargo, a non-profit organization dedicated to spreading its important message. Throughout the school, various efforts are helping to spread the true spirit of giving.
This holiday season, there are plenty of ways to get involved, even if you’re short on time. Consider cleaning out your closet and donating gently used, clean clothes to organizations like The Dakota Boys & Girls Ranch, which supports children in need. Volunteering your time is another great option—whether it’s spending a few hours wrapping presents for Bridging the Gap or lending a hand at The Dorothy Day Food Pantry to help organize donations or assist with food distribution.
The holidays aren’t just about receiving gifts—they’re about creating connections. Volunteering gives everyone a chance to step outside themselves and remember that the best gifts can’t be wrapped. As the new year approaches, let’s keep the spirit alive through big or small gestures. We can all make a difference. So, what will you give this holiday season?
