Imagine waking up on the first day of Christmas break, fresh snow coats the ground, there isn’t a school assignment in sight, and you can practically smell the Christmas cookies that will come to fortition in your kitchen on Christmas Eve. To really get into the spirit you decide to watch a Christmas movie. Everything is perfect. But wait, there’s a problem! The amount of Holiday movies is simply overwhelming, and you can’t even begin to think about which ones to prioritize! Well, look no further, this article will describe the 3 best and most overrated Christmas movies!
3 best Christmas movies
White Christmas, Elf, and Christmas Carol (2009) are by far the most entertaining and best Christmas movies. If you can only watch 3 Christmas movies this holiday season, then let it be these 3. There is an all-star team of actors in these films with Jim Carrey, Will Ferrel, and Bing Crosby.
White Christmas is a throwback to the 1950s and has a beautiful score that ended up winning an academy award in 1954.
Elf is just a classic Christmas movie that is a must watch year after year. This story shows that you should never give up and always be kind to others. Theres humor for kids and adults alike making it perfect for the whole family.
Last but certainly not least is the 2009 production of Christmas Carol with Jim Carrey. It follows Ebeneezer Scrooge, a grumpy old man that hates Christmas and how he finds his Christmas spirit. Any of these Christmas movies would be an excellent choice to inspire joy during the holidays.
3 most overrated Christmas movies
Finding a good Christmas movie can be difficult so it isn’t surprising that there are a few overplayed, over enjoyed and just downright overrated films in this popular category. The Home Alone franchise, Love Actually and The Nightmare Before Christmas are the most overrated Christmas movies.
The Home Alone franchise is repetitive, boring, and unrealistic even for Christmas movies. I will give credit where credit is due, the 1st movie was a total hit for good reason. It has all the characteristics you would want in a Christmas movie. It’s funny, sappy and ends in a way that just makes your heart warm but by the time the 3rd and 4th movie roles around I’m sick of it. Even the 2nd movie raises some earnest questions. How do you lose your child for the second year in a row? Overall, this movie just gets more hype than it deserves.
Love Actually follows the newly elected prime minister of Britan as well as a few other side stories that end up connecting in the end. The whole point of the movie is to show that “Love is actually all around.” This statement is also made during the credits before the movie begins. Not only are many of these stories problematic and offensive, but it is also more of a romcom than a Christmas movie. This is a movie that you could watch in June if you wanted to, not that I recommend that either because there are much better romcoms out there.
The 3rd movie is The Night Before Christmas. This movie makes the list not because it’s a bad movie but because it is simply not a Christmas movie. The soundtrack, editing and Tim burton style make it a Halloween movie not a Christmas movie. It doesn’t inspire holiday spirit, no one is jumping for joy, and it certainly doesn’t hype up Christmas. If anything, it points out the materialistic flaws of the holidays. Just because it has Christmas in the title doesn’t make it a Christmas movie and anyone can figure that out if you simply watch the film.
