As the Congress season launches off into full swing, many students start sharpening their public speaking skills and critical thinking for an exciting competitive fall. Our congress members have been working diligently and hard getting ready for competitions. Practice started in August of this year under the lodge of new captains, Isabel Flanagan, Charlotte Lovejoy, Nora Aeilts, and returning captain, Jayla Ridout.
What is Congress?
Congress is a mock legislative session where students debate bills and and resolutions to later on vote on the bills and resolutions. The Topics that students debate on range from civil rights, economy, to the environment. They essentially work as the House of Representatives. Being involved helped students develop public speaking, argumentative, and researching skills.
Getting ready for the season.
It’s no secret that our congress members are working hard to prepare for their first meet. We asked one of the captains, Isabel Flanagan, what they are doing to prepare the team! She said, “We have practice every day after school until 5:30 and are working to have adequate research and speeches prepared for the first meet.”
What is the team dynamic? Should you join Congress?
“Our team dynamic is very supportive and fun! We make sure to have a good time no matter the results. We love to watch each other and other team succeed and support each other no matter what. I would tell people to try it out! We are very flexible for busy schedules and willing to make it work for you. We are also super welcoming to members!” Responded Isabel.
Congress season is just starting up this year! It is never too late for any new members to join! Anyone who would like to join can go to the library after school or talk to Mr. Amberg, Ms. Timmerman, Ms. Bolstad, or Ms. Hughes for any more information about Congress!
The Congress captains were able to tell us that their first meet is September 21 and 22 in Bismarck, so don’t forget to cheer them on as they work hard with their house to be able to win, and if you’re interested don’t hesitate to reach to be part of our Student Congress!
