Congressional Debate, also known as Student Congress, was the first State Championship in Hawk History last year! Individual state champion and 6-year congressman; Senior; Griffin Terras illustrates many of his experiences, “The majority of what I learned is just how to speak publicly and a lot of it has boosted my confidence especially with giving presentations in school. I actually look forward to them. So, I say that’s pretty Baller.”
Famous faces including Adam Sandler, Oprah Winfrey, and Chadwick Boseman are all alumni of Congressional Debate. Not only does student Congress expand our horizons, but it also gives us a larger perspective of the world we live in and equips us to speak up and seek change in today’s society. For those who need college filler… all forms of debate look great on applications and increases chances to get into college by 22-30% (Arizona College Prep 2022). Famous talk show host, Oprah Winfrey received a full ride scholarship to Tennessee State University for winning a speaking contest; something that she likely wouldn’t have excelled at without debate.
Besides the educational advantages, joining student Congress also provides wide opportunities to connect with new people. “Congress has made me a lot of friends,” said Congress State Champion Griffin Terras. “I don’t think I would have any friends, ever if I didn’t do forensics.”
Whether you’re looking for an extra addition to your college resume, to join an activity, or to connect with new people, student Congress may be the choice for you.
