You may have noticed a hawk statue has recently graced our entryway into the school. The bronze bird looks to be landing on a perch gracefully, wings spread wide. The Hawk landed here in November, just in time for its first winter here. To learn more about the Hawk, I interviewed Bob and Nicole Christiansen, former heads of the Booster Club.
Who made the decision to get The Hawk?
Parents on the Horace Hawks Booster Club wanted to honor our new school and first graduating class. The project has been in the works for several months and was designed in the image of our logo, the flying hawk.
What does it represent?
The Hawk is “landing” which represents our entry into the West Fargo school district. It shows how our school is a permanent and strong addition to the district.
What does it mean to our school?
Despite the youth of the school, it does not lack the amenities or traditions of other schools in the district. It was placed at the entryway to remind staff and students of the strength of being a Hawk. The statue will also have a plaque dedicating it to the Class of 2024, the first graduating class of Horace High School. It honors the legacy they built and the culture they created in the school.
What is it made of?
The decision to make the statue bronze was driven by the need to withstand the climate here. Both hot summers and brutal winters are no match for The Hawk. The statue company built a clay mold of our logo with images of real flying hawks, paying attention to each detail for the realistic statue we have now.
The dimensions of the statue are: 77″ L x 45″ W x 55″ H
Wing tip to wing tip: 77”
Height from Talon to head: 55”
Finally (and perhaps most importantly) What is its name?
Currently, the Hawk is dubbed “The Hawk”. Students may wish to change the name later on, but the booster club kept it simple.
